Tip #1 The $20 Sandwich
When you arrive in Las Vegas and are about to check-in at your hotel make sure to use the $20 Sandwich. It is basically a tip to the desk clerk to try and get a better room for nothing – well $20. Put your I.D., credit card (we also add our players cards so that they know we are regulars) and $20 down on the counter all at the same time. Clearly ask – Are there any complimentary upgrades available? The clerk will look in the computer and maybe go away to ask for permission. The websites devoted to this trick say that most times it works. Usually if the employee can’t do it they will give you the money back. Occasionally they don’t. So consider it a gamble. Might as well. You are in Vegas after all.
Some informative websites on this subject are The Twenty Dollar Trick and Front Desk Tip, http://www.frontdesktip.com/las-vegas/planet-hollywood/.
Both times we have used the trick (at the Rio and the Flamingo) we received better rooms. The first time we got a recently renovated room on a higher floor with a view of the strip, a $40 per night upgrade for a one time tip of $20. The last $20 gave us a room with a coffee maker and a mini-fridge. Almost unheard of in Las Vegas.
On an up-coming trip to LV we will be attempting the sandwich at Planet Hollywood with another couple. We are considering putting $50 down together to see what that will get us.
I want people to understand, gambling is not a bad thing if you do it within the framework of what it’s meant to be, which is fun and entertaining.
