Living on Less

Hmm… wise words from Nickelback. Yes. I am serious.

One more depending on a prayer
And we all look away
People pretending everywhere
It’s just another day

There’s bullets flying through the air
And they still carry on
We watch it happen over there
And then just turn it off

(Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
We must stand together
(Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
There’s no giving in
(Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Hand in hand forever
(Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
That’s when we all win
(Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
That’s, that’s, that’s when we all win
That’s, that’s, that’s when we all win

They tell us everything’s alright
And we just go along
How can we fall asleep at night?
When something’s clearly wrong

When we could feed a starving world
With what we throw away
But all we serve are empty words
That always taste the same
(Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)

We must stand together
(Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
There’s no giving in
(Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Hand in hand forever
(Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
That’s when we all win
(Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
That’s, that’s, that’s when we all win
That’s, that’s, that’s when we all win

The right thing to guide us
Is right here, inside us
No one can divide us
When the light is nearly gone
But just like a heartbeat
The drumbeat carries on

And the drumbeat carries on
(Just like a heartbeat)

(Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
We must stand together
(Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
There’s no giving in
(Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Hand in hand forever
(Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
That’s when we all win
(Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
That’s, that’s, that’s when we all win
That’s, that’s, that’s when we all win

Okay. I know. Nickleback, right? But it’s really catchy and has some good points.

One part that hits me right away is the phrase “When we could feed a starving world
With what we throw away..

Our solar cone food digester is being abused by how much we put in it every day. Our cupboards are stocked. Our fridge is full-ish. Obviously we are not eating all the food we buy. We let it go to waste. Meanwhile people are starving all over the world.

I am going to do the brown bag challenge in September again, sans brown bag of course! No food at work unless it’s packed from home for the whole month. It will force me to eat the food already purchased vs. wasting money on Subway.

What do you do to reduce food waste?

  1. It’s been a long day, but I love Nickelback so I just had to check out your post before hitting the sack. This is a great song, and the same lines jump out at me too. Food waste has been a problem for me this past week. I have been getting all my food from the farmer’s market and always buy extra for company (and grand kids) but this week things just didn’t all get eaten in time and I had quite a bit of waste. I’m trying to tell myself it isn’t that bad because I bought it locally and all will be composted to help next years gardens but it still bugs me to toss food.

    • One of my favourite Nickleback songs is the one about being a rockstar. When my husband and I started dating I won a debate on whether Nickleback was originally from Alberta or from BC. I never let him forget.

Sure any waste is wasteful but in comparision to what your food waste could be comprised of I’d say your doing awesome. I have to admit a lot of the food that goes in the green cone is bread that has gone moldy.
