Living on Less

Goodbye Aunt Jemima!

We love syrup on our pancakes and waffles. I got sucked into a “deal” for some Aunt Jemima a while ago so we have been finishing it off not to be wasteful. Luckily they had a great price on real Maple Syrup at Trader Joe’s so it’s goodbye Aunt Jemima, welcome back real!

Aunt Jemima Original Syrup Ingredients : Glucose, Glucose-Fructose, Water, Cellulose Gum, Natural and Artifical Flavour, Salt, Caramel Colour, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Sorbic Acid, Sulphites. Contains Sulphite Ingredients (plastic bottle)

Trader Joe’s Organic Maple Syrup Ingredients : 100% Organic Pure Maple Syrup (glass bottle)

Which one would you prefer?

Former Education Specialist for a corporation, I have now taken a step back to spend time with my family and work closer to home. Hoping to reduce our waste through refusing, reducing and reusing so that we will not have to recycle as much. Also, I love to explore zero-waste fast food and take pictures of my sucesses. I'm a fan of British comedies like Red Dwarf and Black Adder, Kevin Smith and his movies, Asian food, documentaries, biographies and going to Las Vegas on vacation. If someone told me I could only listen to the Beatles for the rest of my life I would die happy.

  1. We are lucky to have lots of local maple syrup available.mwe go through a couple of cases a year. We buy it straight from the farmer who makes it.

I’ve never tried the other kind.

  2. I like that you’ve traded in plastic for glass as well! My husband and I have both commented that we’ve noticed changes in our bodies from living zero waste, because we can’t purchase most of the brand name products due to their packaging. It is crazy when you look at the ingredients in many of our beloved brands, they are essentially poison. Good rule to live by is if it has more than 5 ingredients don’t buy it, and if you don’t know what the ingredients mean don’t buy it! Even when I go to Bulk Barn, I check the ingredients thoroughly, I used to buy any of the dried fruit that appealed to me, until I learned that most dried fruit keeps it’s color by using sulphur dioxide on it. I had no clue what that was so I googled it and found out it has been linked to cancer. Now I only buy the organic dried fruit. That is just one example of how backwards our food system is, something that is supposedly a “healthy choice” actually has potential to give you a deadly disease. We all need to be informed on what we put into our bodies, look past the fancy label. Good post!
