Zero-Waste Fast Food?

Zero-Waste Fast Food? A & W Kids Meal

During our recent visit to the mall we bought our oldest son a kids size A&W hamburger and fries. This is what a kid’s meal can look like from a fast food restaurant. Notice the missing box and toy. The plan was to buy an Orange Julius as the drink so that’s why we didn’t ask for a drink. As always with A&W, they had no problem giving us the meal in our container. They took the Rubbermaid container into the back to fill the order. The woman who took our order told me the person in the back was excited to do it. As you can see in the photo they put a paper towel down on the bottom of our Rubbermaid. I will still consider this zero-waste fast food attempt a success. The paper towel wicked away some of the grease from the fries which is kinda handy. In some towns they have green waste pickup in which the paper towel could be added and turned into compost. I will remind myself next time to ask for nothing added into the container though. A&W in the mall also has zero-waste ketchup! This is an easy thing that fast food companies can do to reduce their impact.

In the end my son didn’t want to eat his lunch because he filled up on daddy’s fries. I ended up eating it the next day. This year our goal is to reduce our fast food intake. My husband has even said he plans to not eat McDonald’s anytime soon. So there will be less zero-waste fast food posts. I do have my waistline to watch.

Have a great day!

Hoping to reduce our waste through refusing, reducing and reusing so that we will not have to recycle as much. Also, I love to explore zero-waste fast food and take pictures of my sucesses. I'm a fan of British comedies like Red Dwarf and Black Adder, Kevin Smith and his movies, Asian food, documentaries, biographies and going to Las Vegas on vacation. If someone told me I could only listen to the Beatles for the rest of my life I would die happy.
