Zero-Waste Fast Food?

Zero-Waste Fast Food? Quiznos

As part of my getting ready for 2012 I am finishing posting half-finished and abandoned drafts. This is one of them.

In November I finally did a zero-waste visit to Quiznos. Due to temporarily losing the cord for our camera the photo was never added so I didn’t post it. I give up. When I find the cord again I will add the photo!

Quiznos has a similar set up to Subway. I did notice a big difference  on this zero-waste fast food? mission though. They do not automatically put your sandwich on a piece of paper. Sandwiches are built on what looks like a small stainless steel cooking rack. I tried to ask and look over the counter about whether their meat is separated in paper. Due to a bit of a language barrier I just asked for a meatball sub. At Subway I know that the meatballs are not separated so it’s a zero-waste option. Figured Quiznos was the same and went on with my order. Showing my Rubbermaid container and giving a quick explanation of what I wanted gave me the response I wanted. Of course! Clarity seems to be the solution to get what you want. No napkins, no paper, no plastic please 🙂 Just put it in my container please.

I have come to the conclusion that if the business has receipts that automatically print then it is more environmentally friendly to take them. If you leave them at businesses they will just throw the receipts away. When I take it then I know I will recycle the paper.

  1. The whole receipt thing gets my panties in a knot. I work in retail, I hate receipts. And, I would like to point out that most receipts are printed on paper coated with BPA, our favourite toxic plastic.

Not only that the ink fades to the point of being unreadable after less than a year. With today’s technology, there is no reason why tills cannot be made to offer the choice of printing out a receipt.

    • Hey Sarah! I totally agree. One of the things I think Starbucks has right is that they do give the option of whether or not to print the receipt. Most of the receipts we get are from grocery stores and they do not have that option on their tills.
