The Year in Review – Part 1

We have made some big changes this year to improve our effect on the environment. Two of them I believe are the most significant. Our green cone has let us take care of our own food waste and the installation of our Electronic Thermostat which promises up to a 33% reduction in heating costs.

Some smaller changes that we plan on continuing with into the future include the purchasing of environmentally friendly cleaning products like dish detergent and laundry soap. Some brands that we use are Seventh Generation and Method. Some products have been made extinct in our home. We no longer buy bubble bath, Febreeze or Partylite tea lights. The tea lights bother me because they claim to be recyclable but the # is not one that can be recycled in BC. It’s been an easy transition to zero-waste bathroom bar soap and I don’t miss liquid soap one bit.

Over the past few days we’ve been bagging up as much unnecessary items in our home for pickup tomorrow by the Diabetes. Every piece of baby clothes 12-18 months and under has been added. Every last non-childrens VHS movie is going. Well there are two exceptions. One is the video of my husband as a child and the other is “Superstar” that I taped a long time ago. Maybe I’ll watch it one last time and donate it next time. The odds and ends started piling up. A few cookbooks, a lamp etc… are leaving us forever!!!We added baby toys that won’t be missed, some Christmas decorations that wouldn’t be missed and some of our clothes too. It’s the push we need. The goal of getting as much crap out of our house before 2012.

I tried a bunch of new products this year. The Toothy Tabs I bought will unfortunately make the never again list. Yes they have recyclable packaging but the taste is just not great. I do love my new toothbrush with the replaceable heads. Also here to stay is shaving the old-fashioned way with shaving soap and a brush. It makes me happy and I still haven’t had to buy a new bar. I tried Naturelux mascara on Christmas day and had a horrible allergic reaction to it. My work sent me home yesterday so I could go to the clinic because my eye was so swollen. Both eyes reacted but the left one swelled so much it was hitting the edge of my glasses. It maybe a few months or years until I try another “more natural” mascara. All I can say is Naturelux you suck! Ha ha. Even with two days of Benadryl it’s still itchy and a bit swollen.

Have you found any must-have products this year?

Wife, mom, concerned citizen of the earth. Striving towards intentional living rather than blindly following. Former Education Specialist for a corporation, I have now taken a step back to spend time with my family and work closer to home. Hoping to reduce our waste through refusing, reducing and reusing so that we will not have to recycle as much. Also, I love to explore zero-waste fast food and take pictures of my sucesses. I'm a fan of British comedies like Red Dwarf and Black Adder, Kevin Smith and his movies, Asian food, documentaries, biographies and going to Las Vegas on vacation. If someone told me I could only listen to the Beatles for the rest of my life I would die happy.
