De-cluttering

Things keep leaving the house but more is always being added…

I really feel that we are making some progress at our house. Every week we are producing less and less waste. This week we only put out 1.5 bags of garbage. Woo hoo!!! Hopefully it will continue to go down each week. Even the amount of recycling was way down from last week. Quite a large amount of donations left the house too. Both my husband and I parted with lots of clothing that we admitted is never worn. Some kids items and other household things went off to charity also.

Last month we had an offer we couldn’t turn down. Someone was getting rid of a huge LCD tv for a great price. We bought it and moved our smaller LCD tv into our bedroom. Our Sony Wega tube tv got the boot! We still need to find a new owner for it so it’s been hanging out on our bedroom floor. Seems like no one wants it even though it was considered a very good tv when we bought it. I’m happy that the new tv is more energy-efficient.

Earlier in the week we did accept a newer microwave from family. They had an extra they didn’t need so we switched out our ten-year old stainless steel one. It’s white and matches the rest of our appliances. I didn’t think it would make a huge difference but it makes everything look better in the kitchen. We were going to buy an over the range microwave but this will keep me happy for a while. When the rain stops we will be putting the old one on the street with a free sign and put a notice on Craigslist.

Our computer died a quick death last week as you know. Really it was bound to happen sooner or later.   That’s what happens when a toddler keeps turning it off by every way imaginable. We broke down and bought a laptop. So far so good. It definitely is faster and more energy-efficient than our home computer was. We are really getting into the present times. Having a webcam will be really helpful for me to keep in touch with family overseas and across the country. Time will tell if we end up buying either a small tabletop pc or another laptop at some point in the future. For now I think we have made a good decision. The dead pc will be copied, erased and then recycled. All the other parts will be given away or recycled. Another added bonus is the noise reduction. The old computer was so loud I could hear the humming when I sat near it.

Today I spent a little time putting plastic film over most of the windows to save some heat loss this winter. Another use for a blow dryer! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Window_insulation_film It wasn’t that hard and it doesn’t look that bad.

Have a great day,

Former Education Specialist for a corporation, I have now taken a step back to spend time with my family and work closer to home. Hoping to reduce our waste through refusing, reducing and reusing so that we will not have to recycle as much. Also, I love to explore zero-waste fast food and take pictures of my sucesses. I'm a fan of British comedies like Red Dwarf and Black Adder, Kevin Smith and his movies, Asian food, documentaries, biographies and going to Las Vegas on vacation. If someone told me I could only listen to the Beatles for the rest of my life I would die happy.
