Could an e-mail make a difference? Cineplex Odeon

This is the message I sent Cineplex Odeon on Friday.

Last night I paid for two regular pops and one regular popcorn for my husband and I. When I go to the theatre I bring my own refillable cup and my own bucket. So far no theatre has refused my request to fill my items directly so as not to be wasteful. My husband on the other hand will take a disposable cup and lid. I was very disappointed on Thursday when the worker refused my request to have my own cup and my plastic Famous Players Popcorn bucket filled up. Instead I had to accept a paper bag and a disposable cup and lid that are now in a landfill somewhere. I don’t see any difference between getting my cup filled up at 7-11 or Starbucks than at your business. The worker was kind about it but I am saddened to know that I was not able to utilize a product you previously sold me (the bucket) to be a little lighter on the earth. I really enjoy buying snacks at the movies. We go to the movies very often. Just this week I took the kids to the 3D Smurf movie and then just three days later we were at this specific theater for Bad Teacher. Now I will reconsider visiting your theatres or at the very least not purchasing snacks. My suggestion is there should be some corporate discussion on reducing your impact on the environment by allowing people to bring their own containers.

 Thank you,

Going to the movies is one of my favorite pastimes. Eating popcorn just seems to belong with the experience and it’s sad that now I have a bad memory about it. But wait… here is the reply I got back! There is hope. People might hear my plight!

Dear Stephanie,

Thank you for contacting Cineplex Entertainment.  We appreciate bringing your suggestion of using reusable containers and understand the desire to decrease waste at our locations.  We will be forwarding your comments to the appropriate department for their review.

That makes me happy.

Monday I went to the movies by myself. Glee 3D was too irresistible to pass up and my husband definitely didn’t want to see it with me. In my opinion it was great. I even had a tear or two! There was something missing on my lap and in the cup holder beside me though.

Until next time,

Wife, mom, concerned citizen of the earth. Striving towards intentional living rather than blindly following. Former Education Specialist for a corporation, I have now taken a step back to spend time with my family and work closer to home. Hoping to reduce our waste through refusing, reducing and reusing so that we will not have to recycle as much. Also, I love to explore zero-waste fast food and take pictures of my sucesses. I'm a fan of British comedies like Red Dwarf and Black Adder, Kevin Smith and his movies, Asian food, documentaries, biographies and going to Las Vegas on vacation. If someone told me I could only listen to the Beatles for the rest of my life I would die happy.
