Zero-Waste Fast Food? Vietnamese Sub

Mmmmm…. Vietnamese Sub. If you’ve never had one it is hard to describe the flavors. I tried one for the first time during a business trip to Calgary. Most Vietnamese restaurants have subs on their menus. When I gave it a try it was love at first bite. Today I visited a fast food Vietnamese sub shop. I asked for a beef sub with no onions and told the employee that I didn’t want any paper or anything. Just the sub in my Rubbermaid container, please! I paid and watched a bit while waiting. The employee was wearing disposable plastic gloves. She filled two plastic bowls being filled with beef and a few other things. The 16″ bun went through the toaster to melt some cheese. The bun was then filled with the contents of the bowls and the employee took my container to put my sub in. Concerned about the plastic bowls I asked if the bowls were going to be thrown away. I was assured that the bowls are always washed and re-used. The only suggestion I would have would be to switch to ceramic. They did not try to force receipts, napkins or anything else on me. This zero-waste lunch was very successful…and delicious!

Where should I eat next?

Former Education Specialist for a corporation, I have now taken a step back to spend time with my family and work closer to home. Hoping to reduce our waste through refusing, reducing and reusing so that we will not have to recycle as much. Also, I love to explore zero-waste fast food and take pictures of my sucesses. I'm a fan of British comedies like Red Dwarf and Black Adder, Kevin Smith and his movies, Asian food, documentaries, biographies and going to Las Vegas on vacation. If someone told me I could only listen to the Beatles for the rest of my life I would die happy.
