Zero-Waste Fast Food? Starbucks

Starbucks. One part of their business is retail sales of re-usable cups, coffee makers, bodums etc… and then there is the consumable products they sell. It used to be they would ask you if it as for here or to go. If you were staying they would put it in a ceramic mug for you. Nowadays they don’t ask that. If you don’t bring your own cup they provide you with one that is partially recyclable but for the most part people tend to throw them out before they get home. I have one hot and one cold re-usable beverage cups of theirs. Still there are days I do not have them on me when I get a craving. Usually when I go there it is just for a drink but sometimes I get a snack too. They have sandwiches in plastic containers and water pre-bottled for convenience. Many options are there though that can be done zero-waste. Chocolate covered pretzels, scones, crispy rice squares and bananas are just some of the options that don’t come already packaged. The only thing we need to do is refuse the little bags and come prepared with a container and a to-go cup. So today I wanted a coffee while at work. I went to the Starbucks next door to my work and took a look at the wall behind the counter. Low and behold they still have ceramic mugs back there. When I asked whether or not I could borrow a mug and bring it back later (they knew where to find me) they agreed. So with my steaming cup of joe I returned to work experiment intact! Okay so most of you wouldn’t be able to do that. Of course we could just ask for our drink in a cup and consume it while at the coffee shop once it a while. Savour the little moments or something to that effect.

About stephanieough

Wife, mom, concerned citizen of the earth. Striving towards intentional living rather than blindly following. Former Education Specialist for a corporation, I have now taken a step back to spend time with my family and work closer to home. Hoping to reduce our waste through refusing, reducing and reusing so that we will not have to recycle as much. Also, I love to explore zero-waste fast food and take pictures of my sucesses. I'm a fan of British comedies like Red Dwarf and Black Adder, Kevin Smith and his movies, Asian food, documentaries, biographies and going to Las Vegas on vacation. If someone told me I could only listen to the Beatles for the rest of my life I would die happy.
